 Chemistry’s raison d’être is the pleasure of conversing with nature on an atomic and molecular level, understanding nature, and using that understanding to create new substances. Among the substances of the natural world, which possess a plethora of structures and properties there are many which possess useful physical properties and physiological functions. Humankind has been obtaining knowledge about these substances from time immemorial.
The central branches of chemistry are those that determine the structure of various naturally existing substances, elucidate on reactivity, and synthesize useful substances. However, modern chemistry has progressed yet further, and it now plays the role of fundamental field of study relating to substances in the broad fields of materials science and biological science by creating and inquiring into the nature of compounds that possess new structures and physical properties, clarifying the structure and reactive mechanisms of living molecules, etc. It is also expected that chemistry will not only develop new substances that will create a rich cultural society, but will play an active role in the resolution of environmental problems such as global warming and the destruction of the ozone layer that will influence the very continued existence of the human race.


The educational objective of the Materials Science Major (Chemistry Department) in the postgraduate physical science course at Nagoya University is the education of the following types of individuals.

International researchers capable of planning the establishment of new research fields and leading cutting edge chemistry at public and private research organizations.

Chemistry educators capable of fostering the ingenuity to hand down chemistry knowledge and technology in various institutions of higher education and open the way to the future

3.


High level professionals who are highly specialized and have mastered cutting edge chemical technology.

To that end we have appointed researchers who are internationally active in the fundamental fields of chemistry such as organic chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, and physical chemistry as teaching staff, and have prepared a cutting edge research and education environment.
